About Us

“The challenges of our age are global; they transcend national frontiers; they are problems without passports. To address them, we need blue prints without borders. That is why more than ever before, we need dedicated and talented young men and women to be global citizens who make the choice of service to humankind….. a society that cuts itself from its youth severs its lifeline, but a society that engages their interests, enlists their talents and liberates their energies brings hope to the entire world”
Kofi Annan
United Nations Secretary-General
1997-2007

Hiya! Welcome to the official site of the Global Xchange Returned Volunteers in Nigeria (GXRV, Nigeria). The GXRV consists of young people (Nigerians) who have participated in the Global Xchange Youth Programme which is based on a model of youth exchanges originally developed in Canada over thirty years ago. Known as World Youth, these exchanges were designed to be fully reciprocal, involving young people from the developed and developing world in equal numbers, and working on community projects in both areas.

This model was brought to the United Kingdom in 1999 by Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), who ran youth exchanges for several years with funding from the Millennium Commission. In early 2004 VSO, the British Council, and Community Service Volunteers (CSV) entered into a partnership to continue developing this model, and the Global Xchange partnership was born.

The Nigerian GX Country Management Team (CMT) is made up of the British Council (BC, Nigeria), Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO, Nigeria) and Life Vanguards (LIVA, Nigeria).

Since its creation, Global Xchange has run thirteen exchanges with the UK among which young Nigerians participated in cities like:

  • Glasgow, Scotland and Ibadan, Nigeria (GX1) .
  • Birmingham, England and Jos, Nigeria (GX2).
  • Bristol, England and Calabar, Nigeria (GX3) .
  • Edinburgh, Scotland and Calabar, Nigeria (GX4).

The Global Xchange programme is a six-month exchange programme which gives young people from different countries a unique opportunity to work together, to develop and share valuable skills and to make a practical contribution where it is needed in local communities.

In the spirit of continuity and based on the experience gained on the programme, the returned volunteers in Nigeria deem it fit to come together as a body for a continual contribution to the development of Nigeria and it's young people. As change agents, the GXRVs has been a voice on social issues that affect Africa and the global world. Such as Trade Justice, Climate Change/Environment, Corruption, HIV and AIDS, Female Genital Mutilation(FGM), Cultural Diversity, Gender Equality, Global Citizenship Education and many more.

We choose not to KEEP SILENT! We choose to STAND UP!! Not that there are no seats to sit on but because we want to BE COUNTED while it is day, for the night comes when we may not be able. Young and Active indeed we are !

Our mission
"Global Xchange aims to support the development of active global citizens, committed to working for positive change within communities."

Aha! Here is another creative corner for us GXers to express our mind beautifully.
Together we aspire, together we achieve, together we make great things happen! Because we can and we will, with God on our side. For we are active global citizens committed to working for a positive change! Don't forget that and don't mix it up!

I want to officially welcome everyone to this site. Let's make use of it. It serves so many purpose. It 's rich in information about who are and what we are up to. Visitors can surf the pages. It serves as as a blog site as well-you can post and reply comments, however, individual may have to register to add comments. This is to ensure that whoever writes anything takes responsibility for whatever he/she writes. It's easy! Let us stand up and get counted. Can I request each committee to forward updates needed on the site.(Such as the actual date of the summit, venue, arrangements, speakers etc). Share your opinion. GX4, have U got pictures at all? e mail me some please. If we all find this site acceptable, I will suggest we include the site address:www.gxrvolunteers.wetpaint.com in official documents and other things especially as it may relate to the GX SUMMIT 2007. This shows how serious we are. It proofs we are really Global Minded People(GMP). And let me tell you, I have linked this site to our major development partners/sponsors websites(VSO and British Council). I can't describe everything though. Let's Keep Pushing. I know we gonna have a successfull outing. The world a'int see nothing yet. Welcome once gain. With love from: 'Muyiwa

Hey people, i think we should all use this website, its obviously more detailed than the other and lets not forget the purpose of the site, to communicate effectively and not a means for wondering which site to and not to use.
As per the summit, anyhead way with sponsors, we really dont have time. Muyiwa, great job. Where are you at the moment? Do you guys thing it's Ok to invite Katung (big brother winner), he will draw people to the program, i think Aunty Ramatu can help us with that. Motun, what do u think?
